BGCBI Provides Free Meals on Hawaii Island During Crisis
A Helping Hand
During this crucial time of need in the world, Boys & Girls Club of the Big Island has decided to provide for our Hawaii Island community, daily hot meals that will go to support children, kupuna, our homeless population, and struggling families that are being affected by the current health and economic crisis we are all facing.
As a result of this crisis many people on Island will lose their source of employment. Churches and volunteer groups that help to bring support to our homeless will not have the ability to hold services, collect donations, and convene to help in their normal fashion. And many of our youth will not have the transportation access to get to the school-based cafeterias that will be offering the out of school meals.
Through our initiative, 878 hot meals are served daily (M-F)!
November Update: Over 140,000 Meals Served!
Our daily "Community Meal Support Initiative" will literally transport and bring nutritional aid to our most vulnerable populations on Island during the crisis and help to fill in some of the shortfalls and resource gaps. Into our eighth consecutive month of meal deliveries, BGCBI has cooked, plated, and delivered 140,000 meal between our two kitchens in East and West Hawaii.
We continue to assist Salvation Army resource centers, State and County owned low-income family housing programs, the Yukio Okutsu Veterans Home, local homeless shelters based in Hilo, Puna and Kona, and struggling families that have been significantly affected by the coronavirus pandemic.

Meal Drop offs
Meals will be dropped off by BGCBI to the Salvation Army, to help feed their family, elderly, and homeless populations. BGCBI will then transport and drop off meals to Hope Services Hawaii, at their three shelters located in East Hawaii and their shelter in Pahoa. Working closely with Councilwoman Susan Lee Loy, BGCBI will help to get our individual sealed meals to keiki, kupuna, homeless and families in-need that are situated in the Hawaiian Home communities of Keaukaha and Panaewa.
Our initiative expanded to West Hawaii were we work closely with Hope Services to set up our Kona Kitchen. Since its establishment our staff in West Hawaii dished out over 400 meals a day. BGCBI is working hard in both kitchens to provide services to those in need. All meals we provide will be free of charge and we hope to be able to build the capacity to produce up to 800 meals 7-days a week throughout the duration of this crisis.
